# Aviation Command Performs Aerial Hoist Rescue For Hunter In Allegany County

**LONACONING, MD** - The Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) conducted a successful aerial hoist rescue for a hunter who fell from a tree stand in Allegany County on the morning of October 22. The incident unfolded at approximately 11:49 a.m. when local officials requested assistance in rescuing the hunter, who was found suspended and inverted in an unknown area of Jackson Mountain.

The crew of Trooper 5, along with an Allegany County Advanced Technical Rescue (ATR) specialist, responded to the scene. The pilot skillfully maneuvered the AW139 helicopter over a clearing, allowing for the deployment of both the Trooper Rescue Technician and the ATR member. They utilized specialized rescue equipment to facilitate the operation, which lasted around 25 minutes.

Ultimately, the victim was successfully lowered to the ground and subsequently hoisted into the helicopter along with the rescue team. Following the rescue, the hunter was transported to a local hospital in Cumberland for treatment of injuries sustained in the fall.

Support at the scene was provided by multiple fire departments, including those from Barton, Lonaconing, LaVale, Shaft, Westernport, Midland, Frostburg, and Mount Savage, along with personnel from the Allegany Department of Emergency Services. The collaborative effort highlights the importance of teamwork among local agencies during emergency situations.

The Maryland State Police Aviation Command, operational since 1970, maintains a fleet of ten Leonardo AW139 helicopters stationed at seven bases across the state. The command carries out a variety of missions, including medevac, law enforcement, search and rescue, and disaster assessment, ensuring coverage for Maryland residents and visitors year-round.
