# Fall Foliage Report Oct. 22

As autumn settles in, fall foliage in western Maryland is reaching its peak, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The department reports that Garrett and Allegany counties are showcasing vibrant colors, while central Maryland is experiencing trees at their midpoint, moving toward peak foliage. Cooler temperatures are expected to enhance the color changes in the coming days.

Forester Bob Schwartz highlighted the beauty of sugar maples, which are currently displaying a stunning array of red, orange, and yellow hues. "You can see a sunset in a single tree," Schwartz noted, emphasizing the visual splendor of these trees this season.

On the Eastern Shore, residents are encouraged to look for the rare ash tree, which turns a brilliant golden yellow in the fall. Despite the challenges posed by the emerald ash borer beetle, which has significantly impacted ash populations, efforts are underway to combat the pest using biocontrols, offering hope for the future of these trees in Maryland's forests.

In Garrett County, Forester Melissa Nash reported a transition in foliage, with early vibrant colors giving way to the warmer tones of oaks and hickory. Meanwhile, in Washington County, Forester Aaron Cook noted that autumn is finally making its presence felt, as a high-pressure system has contributed to the seasonal changes.

As residents enjoy the changing landscapes, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources encourages everyone to appreciate the beauty of fall foliage across the state.
