The Maryland Green Party will keep its place on the state’s ballots after its candidate for governor, Andy Ellis, received about 2% of the vote on Tuesday, more than the 1% state law requires, according to unofficial results from the State Board of Elections.
As of the board’s 4:02 p.m. update Wednesday, with 1,968 of 1,979 Election Day precincts reporting, Ellis and running mate Owen Silverman Andrews had 38,343 votes, or 2.06%. The Working Class Party ticket of Cathy White and Cathy Permut had 36,619 votes, or 1.97%. Results are unofficial until they are certified.
Under Section 4-103 of Maryland’s Election Law, a party whose candidate for the highest office on a statewide general election ballot receives at least 1% of the vote keeps its status “through December 31 in the year of the next following general election.”
Gov. Wes Moore and Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller won re-election. Statewide results are here.
The Ellis campaign released the following statement on Wednesday. It appears below as the campaign issued it.

STATEMENT: ELLIS REFLECTS ON GOV ELECTION, FUTURE MGP PLANS
On November 4, 2026, Andy Ellis, the Maryland Green Party candidate for governor, issued the following statement:
“It is heartwarming to see two different third party campaigns each earning over 30,000 votes, but I think there’s a more important measurement of a third party campaign: showing up.
“This campaign was built on showing up for working class Marylanders. Nearly every day for the last four years, I made an effort to show up for working people to help them organize and advocate for their communities. Too often, campaigns set an agenda and expect voters to fall in line or live in fear. This is the power that we give to the two-party paradigm when we insist that every election is ‘the most important election of our lifetimes.’
“Instead of fear-mongering, we took a scrappy, DIY campaign and fought tooth and nail for every single vote. I think that the 30,000-plus Marylanders who supported us for governor saw something authentic in our campaign that they didn’t see in Governor Moore or Mr. Cox.
“I want to congratulate the governor and lieutenant governor on their re-election victory. But last night was a victory for us, too. With record support (which we’ll break down further when the counts become official), the Maryland Green Party has secured ballot access for 2028, and all of the intervening municipal and special elections in Maryland.
“Securing ballot access gives the Maryland Green Party the space to identify, train, and support new candidates in multiple races throughout Maryland, and to advocate for public policy that benefits all of us, not just wealthy donors and big corporations. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished without the backing of billionaires, or dark money corporate donors. For now, we’ll take a deep breath and a much-needed break. Thank you for your support.”
